Sometimes the best travel meals are the ones you never planned. Just 400 metres from my hotel in Istanbul, I found myself running the gauntlet of restaurant staff all hoping to tempt me inside. For reasons I still can’t quite explain, I stopped at Amara. Well… perhaps it was Vahap’s warm smile. Or perhaps it was the mention of cocktails. Either way, I’m glad I did. A piña colada arrived first, followed by a halloumi salad so fresh it tasted like it had been picked that morning. Alongside it came a trio of dips and a huge puffed Turkish bread that could easily have been a meal on its own.

My original flight was canceled, forcing me to spend a night in Byzantium/Constantinople/Istanbul, formerly the world's largest city. A city walk at dusk... Growing increasingly hungry, I spotted a kebab restaurant that looked quite popular and went in. Unexpectedly, I discovered a hidden gem of a Turkish restaurant. Especially the spicy source of the balon ekmek a—that's my favorite! I even ordered extra! Their craft beer and bottled beer are great.

The pide was really delicious — one of the best I’ve had. The shisha was okay, nothing special. Watching football and Formula 1 there was cool and enjoyable. However, the prices are extremely high. In Istanbul, you can easily find similar food for much less. About one-third of the price would be fair.
