Stumbled upon this place on a rainy day. It was quiet inside during the awkward time between lunch and dinner, but it was a late lunch for me. Staff were all welcoming. The menu has something for everyone and is hilarious to read (apologizing for the price of fish, for example). Good music added to the vibe. The pickled cabbage and mushrooms were great, as was the rye bread and butter. The chicken Kiev was extremely good, I have never seen such a perfectly fried piece of meat. The pomegranate surprised me by adding a lot to the dish. Highly recommend!

Nice place for a relaxed evening, food was tasty and decently portioned. A lot of Russian staples on the menu, done well. The guys running the place were friendly and they also have a great selection of teas. Looking forward to sampling their wines and cocktails on the next visit!

We had dinner at Borscht and Tears today and we could not be happier, or more full. We had borscht and mushroom soup, manti and vareniki. Each dish was full of flavor and better than expected, even for high expectations from someone who ate this food growing up. The mushroom soup was the star and we will come back to Borscht and Tears as soon as we are able to.

In Russian, there is a word toska which represents a strange combination of sadness about the past and hopelessness about the future. Ideally, to perform toska you need a suitable setting — Borshtch and Tears excels in that. The colors are deep and dark. The place hasn't changed a bit in the 15 years I've been away, and most likely, much of the appeal comes straight from the 1960s, when it originally opened. If you're looking for a place to consume a reasonable amount of vodka paired with good Russian food in a setting where the walls help you do it the Russian way — mourning the pointlessnes
